The victim was Arianna Jolee Merrbach, age 5, who was at a relative's home when the incident happened, Von Lutcken said.
Herbie Christmas with Florence County Environmental Services says the dog was full grown and belonged to an aunt of the girl.
He also said at the time of the attack the dog was tied up.
"The animal in question was on a chain, and we do have a tethering ordinance in Florence County, which prohibits that activity under Florence County's section six," Christmas said.
A neighbor, Lulu Waddell, said that in addition to the dog that attacked the girl, the aunt also had another pitbull and a smaller dog. All three of the dogs were taken from the family, Waddell said.
Arianna's body will be sent to MUSC in Charleston on Wednesday for an autopsy. The incident is being investigated by the Florence County Sheriff's Office.
The dog involved in the fatally was brought to Florence County Environmental Services and was euthanized, officials said. The dog's brain was sent to state DHEC lab for analysis, according to officials.

UNION CITY, California — The mother of a 6-year-old Northern California boy killed by a family dog said Thursday that the attack felt like a betrayal.
"It was like one best friend turning on the other," Tilema Selu (tuh-LEE'-muh SAY'-loo) told San Francisco's KGO-TV. "He had no signs of being hostile. In fact, we felt confident that it was a protector of our children."
"We brought the dog into our home as a pet to help protect life," said Keanaaina, a San Mateo police officer. "By no means did we know that it was going to take life.

What happened to Human Rights? Who is going to protect our babies if we don't??
This is a letter written by the mother of Seleena Wickward to the Parents Against Dog Chaining, about her daughter, Saleena's vicious attack by a neighbor's pit bull. This is a powerful letter that should be read by all.
Saleena is a young child VICTIM of a vicious pit bull attack that left her severely injured and disfigured for life.

"I noticed on your map, Utah doesn't show any children injured or killed. I am Saleena Wickward's mother & I can testify that in 2010 alone, 3 children just in our area were injured.
People always have a reason for why that particular dog attacked. Let's be honest, the majority of severely injured children or children mauled TO DEATH comes from the jaws of a Pit. I am often accused of being a "Pit Bull Hater" which humors me. I raised American Pit Bulls, owning a total of 51 over the years. The problem that plagues me is that there IS NOT ALWAYS A REASON THAT AN ANIMAL ATTACKS! Chico (the dog that mauled my daughter) was extremely well cared for. He wasn't left on a chain for hours at a time. He wasn't abused, neglected, taunted, mistreated or anything else that one might think. That dog was taken for walks every day. He spent a lot of his mornings & early afternoons inside with his owners & had ample outside time as well. There wasn't one single thing that anyone could say the owners of Chico didn't do.
So now what? While hundreds of people contacted us when Saleena was initially injured, nobody contacts us about it anymore besides her doctors. Nobody sees the now 7 year old child plagued with nightmares, self image issues, & PTSD . Nobody calls to see why Saleena didn't show up to picture day at school. No one has sympathy for us when we went without a vehicle for 3 months because my once pristine credit is now unworthy of a loan for a piece of paper. No one understands when Saleena's older brother has anxiety & panic attacks when anything even suggests a threat to his younger sisters. Not one person gives an iota of a care when four children won't even go to a public park, pool, or grocery store without the fear of God inside of them at all times. This being after almost 2 years of counseling.
Yet, the support for proper care of animals & Pro Pit Bull banter continues. Like a slap in the face, there's a new commercial, website, or facility asking for donations to save the animals, Pits in particular, almost everyday it seems.
WHEN DO WE START SAVING OUR OWN CHILDREN?! When did animals start ranking above our race...our futures...& the little people we bring into this world that look to us for protection?! Saleena's accident brought out the support for pits more than anything. While a child was stuck in a hospital bed, with her hair being rubbed off the one side of her skull due to the severity of injuries encompassing her head... fighting infection...without the ability to open her eyelids due to the excessive swelling and bruising...having lucid nightmares...withdrawing from morphine...and all of this after having her face pieced back together with glue, stitches, staples, a metal plate, a screws. Her family in a state of emotional/physical/mental perdition, unsure of their loved one's outcome, & unable to be together to support & sooth one another not only during that time but for months to come along with more heartbreaking surgeries, scares, and distress at levels in which some will never even fathom... All of these occurrences & ANYONE was concerned for the dog's situation or fate?!? What?!
It makes me absolutely sick that anyone would donate to any of the "animal support" facilities when there are families like us out there paying astronomical amounts to try to save their child's life, put a face or limb back together for them, & pray that somehow a miracle will happen to save us from the poverty that an animal's mouth plagued our lives with.
We eat cows, chickens, pigs, and other animals but chose a canine's life over or own children.
Honestly, how can anyone be confused as to why our communities grow more corrupt generation by generation, or what we're doing wrong by our children to have our crime rates rise, children shooting up schools, or addictions forming at younger ages continually?
No one seems afraid to stand up for the animals. In my opinion not only should they be afraid, but ashamed. Ignorance plagues our country like an outbreak of Ebola Zaire. Then to add salt to a wound, we publicize the "animals rights over children's safety/lives" for the entire globe to see. There were actually comments on the articles about Saleena's accident saying that "the dog was in his yard (mind you there was no fence & a dog run built having never been used) the little girl got what she deserved". I researched to the highest extent possibly in desperation to find the sadistic tormented mind behind those words. I wanted nothing more than that person to say those words while showing his/her face. There is no way that person had children. I'd love to sit with those people & show them every photo of Saleena taken due to this dog. The pre surgery photos would cause almost anyone to have haunting visions and nightmares for the rest of their days.
I could go on and on from the $ worth put on a little girl's face to every single domino of our lives that fell all aftermath of "man's best friend."
I pray that we quit breeding ignorant & self destructive tendencies into our children. When will there be enough lives taken, enough innocent children sacrificed? I wonder how many "animal rights activists" could voice those same opinions after seeing their child shredded like the first course of a starved lioness.
I wish it was as simple as changing the way we confine our pets. Instead, our communities stand & support this issue as our children are one by one traumatized, brutalized, & demonized. You never hear these stories where the dog owner says they knew there was a problem. The first time so often being the only time due to the severity.
Animal rights..... What happened to Human Rights? Who is going to protect our babies if we don't???"

We are not surprised when a pointer starts pointing
At this point everyone has their roles ready and their lines down pat.
When 6-year-old Nephi Selu was attacked, mauled and killed by a pit bull (or pit bull mix) in Union City, the pit bull critics and the defenders already had their scrip...ts ready to go.
Most of us said what we always say when a pit bull mauls someone — that breed is dangerous. Dr. Alan Beck of Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine put it well when I interviewed in 2005 after a “friendly” pit bull mauled an 88-year-old woman who had interacted with the dog without incident countless times.
“We are not surprised when a pointer starts pointing,” he said. “Or when my dachshund starts digging. Everyone expects that. But if we start talking about a low tolerance for pain and a propensity to attack, it’s wrong.”
But we know the defenders will soon be in full cry. It’s not the dog’s fault, they’ll say, it is the owner. The child should never have put himself in that position. There were other factors we don’t know about.
Someone once compared the pit bull apologists to the National Rifle Association. They have a prepared script, they are vociferous and they are tireless. They’d love to get into a debate with you because it goes on and on and on. They send three e-mails to your one. They have self-serving statistics from advocacy web sites that they can quote for hours.
But here’s the puzzler. They are also often incredibly, uncontrollably angry. All of us in the news business take on the pit bull issue from time to time and we all have stories of threats — “Someone needs to stop you,” was the most recent I got — and warnings. They scream, they insult, and they stoop to racist, offensive language.
But someone died.
A child in this case. An elderly woman in another. In San Francisco in 2005 a woman left her 12-year-old son, Nicholas Faibish, in the basement with two pit bulls. While the parents were away the dogs were put in a room with the door propped shut with a shovel.
When the mother returned her son had been mauled to death. It was, she insisted in an interview with me, a complete surprise.
“My kids got along great with (the dogs),” Maureen Faibish said. “We were never seeing any violent tendencies.”
It happens over and over and it seems there’s never any change or consequence. The city of Denver passed “breed specific legislation” in 1989, targeting pit bulls and dogs with “the major characteristics of one.”
Miami did the same that year, banning pit bulls, and it has held up. Last year a ballot initiative to repeal the ban lost by a resounding 63-36 percent.
Passing an ordinance like that in San Francisco would be hard. But more than that it would be unpleasant. Although the Miami vote indicates that the majority of ordinary citizens aren’t buying the happy chat about pit bulls, few want to take on the insults and anger of the fanatics.
So, apparently, we will stick with what we have — periodic maulings and death, followed by arguments that go nowhere.
And pit bulls roam the streets, wait in back yards and make headlines every time they maul or kill.

Union City police identified the boy as Nephi Selu, who lived in Dixon, and w...as staying with relatives on Elizabeth Way. That's where he was playing with the dog - described as a pit bull type - on Monday about 11:30 a.m. when he was attacked and bitten on the head by the dog, police said. They added that he had been "actively playing" with the dog and may have tried to climb on the dog's back.
The boy was treated at the scene by the the Alameda County Fire Department and later taken to Lucille Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto. The Santa Clara County Coroner pronounced him dead at 2 p.m. Monday.
Neighbors said that they knew there were two dogs in the house. Police said that the dog was taken to the Tri-City Animal shelter and held for a routine 10-day quarantine. The dog's owner was in full compliance with anti-rabies shots and licensing requirements and was "distraught but cooperative" during the police investigation. Police said the owner said the dog had never bitten anyone in the past.See More

The parents of a 5-year-old mauled to death by a Bullmastiff remember their son Wednesday.
“He was my baby. We were close. We were very, very close,” said mother Mica Evans.
Evans says her son, Ayden, liked spaghetti and riding sports bikes..., plus playing with Ninja Turtles.
“My birthday was June 8 and he died June 9,” said Evans.
Garland County deputies say the 5-year-old died inside a Jessieville home, after being attacked by a dog Sunday. His mom says Ayden was staying with her sister for the summer, when he was allowed to go to a neighbor’s home.
