Fatality: A 6-year-old boy who playing on the family pit bull's back was mauled to death in Union City, while on an extended family vacation, police said Tuesday.
Union City police identified the boy as Nephi Selu, who lived in Dixon, and w...as staying with relatives on Elizabeth Way. That's where he was playing with the dog - described as a pit bull type - on Monday about 11:30 a.m. when he was attacked and bitten on the head by the dog, police said. They added that he had been "actively playing" with the dog and may have tried to climb on the dog's back.
The boy was treated at the scene by the the Alameda County Fire Department and later taken to Lucille Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto. The Santa Clara County Coroner pronounced him dead at 2 p.m. Monday.
Neighbors said that they knew there were two dogs in the house. Police said that the dog was taken to the Tri-City Animal shelter and held for a routine 10-day quarantine. The dog's owner was in full compliance with anti-rabies shots and licensing requirements and was "distraught but cooperative" during the police investigation. Police said the owner said the dog had never bitten anyone in the past.See More
