FLORENCE COUNTY, SC -
A young girl in Florence County was killed during a d...og mauling on Tuesday morning, authorities say.
The incident happened at 11:15 am at 7208 Fork Road in Effingham, said Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken
The victim was Arianna Jolee Merrbach, age 5, who was at a relative's home when the incident happened, Von Lutcken said.
Herbie Christmas with Florence County Environmental Services says the dog was full grown and belonged to an aunt of the girl.
He also said at the time of the attack the dog was tied up.
"The animal in question was on a chain, and we do have a tethering ordinance in Florence County, which prohibits that activity under Florence County's section six," Christmas said.
A neighbor, Lulu Waddell, said that in addition to the dog that attacked the girl, the aunt also had another pitbull and a smaller dog. All three of the dogs were taken from the family, Waddell said.
Arianna's body will be sent to MUSC in Charleston on Wednesday for an autopsy. The incident is being investigated by the Florence County Sheriff's Office.
The dog involved in the fatally was brought to Florence County Environmental Services and was euthanized, officials said. The dog's brain was sent to state DHEC lab for analysis, according to officials.
Editor's Note: Earlier incorrect information supplied to WBTW indicated the dog in question belonged to the girl's mother and that the girl's last name started with an "N".See More
