GALESBURG, Illinois - A Galesburg boy is dead after being attacked by a dog described to KWQC News by investigators as a pit bull.
Police say they were called to the 600 block of Whiting Avenue just after one Saturday afternoon. They tell us the boy, 7, was playing in the backyard of a home he was visiting when the attack happened.
Investigators tell KWQC that they now believe the dog was restrained before the attack but managed to break free.
Police were able to get the dog away from the child, but say it then it turned on them. Officers shot the dog to prevent any further attacks. The boy was transported to Cottage Hospital and later died from his injuries.
Police are still investigating how this happened. They are withholding the boy's name pending notification of family
